Ebook About
In this New York Times bestseller, historian Thomas Fleming examines all the dimensions of the memorable year of 1776 - particularly the common, fallible humanity of the men and women of the American Revolution. The year 1776 ended with both the Americans and the British stripped of their illusions. Each side had been forced to abandon the myth of invincibility and confront the realities of human nature on and off the battlefield. For the Americans, it had been a shock to discover that it was easy to persuade people to cheer for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but it was another matter to convince them to make real sacrifices for these ideals. For the British, their goal of achieving proper subordination of America to England was frustrated forever.Seventeen seventy-six was a tragic year: Americans fighting in the name of liberty persecuted and sometimes killed fellow Americans who chose to remain loyal to the old order. Seventeen seventy-six was a year of heroes: It brought forth the leaders who had the courage to fight for freedom. Seventeen seventy-six was a disgraceful year: Americans revealed a capacity for cowardice, disorganization, and incompetence. Here, in this masterful book, is the true story of 1776.

Book 1776 (The Thomas Fleming Library) Review :

I must admit that I purchased this book for my Kindle because of good reviews and a cheap price. "Another Revolutionary War" book? What more is there to learn/say? Having devoured this beautifully written book I can now answer: "Plenty!" Most Americans can single out 1776 as a monumental year in our history but most probably can't get beyond the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Fleming elucidates why this year was so much more important. He explains the various battles and troop movements (most of which the revolutionary army lost) and goes into depth about the in-fighting taking place in Philadelphia between the revolutuionaries and the loyalists. (It may come as a shock to many readers for instance that the large majority of people from New Jersey and New York were NOT in favor of breaking ties with England.) There was also an active anti-war movement in Britain's Parliament. I found it surprising that the brothers Howe (admiral and general) in charge of the British war effort were trying desperately not to destroy the continental army in hopes of a peaceful reconciliation with their fellow subjects gone astray.Whether this is your first book about this fascinating period or you have a whole library devoted to the topic, this book will ad to your understanding of the period. It will also reinforce how tenuous our revolution really was and how close our forebears came to not succeeding in founding our nation. I highly recommend this book!
Unless I'm mistaken, this is the eBook version of "1776 the Year of Illusions" first published in 1975.  1776 Year of Illusions It's a shame this kindle version doesn't carry the same title, a title that explains why the book was written and what you can expect to find. It's an easy read with a great opening description of the campaign to capture Quebec City. The book doesn't come across as a debunker of classical American myth, but as an explainer of what really happened. Complete battle plans and detailed strategies you won't find here, but you will find a better understanding of the real people who participated in the contest with England in the context of realities that made them.I'm giving it 4 stars based on my faded memories of the book I read way back when, and based on the assumption that only the Bible and the Quijote deserve 5 stars. I'm in the midst of re-reading the book. Maybe I'll change my mind about the rating...Anecdotal - maybe, but isn't a history supposed to contain anecdotes?
