Summary: good book, but all of his recommended supplements are exact duplicates of more affordable supplements already on the market and available through Amazon. List below.As many other readers have already noted, this is a thoroughly researched, organized trove of information about the gut with systemic guidelines that are easy and practical to follow. But in the supplement protocol portion of the book, rather than recommending specific herbs and dosages, he recommends a protocol called "Dr. Ruscio's Biota Clear 1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b" (which can only be purchased on his website). It is true that Dr. Ruscio is not forcing the reader to buy these supplements (as he defensively pointed out in response to another Amazon reviewer's criticism), but by recommending only his brand of formulations rather than the specific herbal dosages, the reader is left with the understanding that his or her only option is to purchase the Dr. Ruscio formulations from his online shop. This is the ONLY part of the book that is vague. The total cost of his recommended supplements to complete the protocol are thousands of dollars, so if every person who purchased this book purchased the supplements he recommended, he would clearly stand to make a huge profit.I don't think it is wrong for Dr. Ruscio to make a profit off his book or to suggest his own brand of supplements, it's just that as a doctor who incessantly talks on his podcast and book about being a critical and healthy skeptic, I would think that if he was only going to promote is own supplements, he would at least back it up with a solid justification for why his brand of supplements are say, superior to others on the market (for example, his company has better quality control, etc.). But without any substantive reason to promote only his supplements, it feels like this great book is all just a lead up to spending thousands of dollars in his store. Because the rest of the book is so good and evidence-based, by the time you get to the end where he suggests his supplements, it is easy to feel a level of trust in him and feel like your only option to getting healthy is to purchase from his store.When I researched the ingredients and dosages in his recommended supplements, I found that all of his formulations are exact duplicates, ingredient line by ingredient line, of other (often more affordable) supplements already on the market, and then repackaged under his "Dr. Ruscio Biota" brand. I've compiled a list of the duplicates below.
