Ebook About From the bestselling author of A Higher Call and Spearhead comes an unflinching firsthand chronicle of the heroic US Marines who fought on Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and in other pivotal battles during the Pacific War, a classic book now expanded with new stories from the flyboys overhead and the home front at war. Following fifteen Marines from Pearl Harbor, through their battles with the Japanese, to their return home after V-J Day, Adam Makos and Marcus Brotherton have compiled an oral history of the Pacific War in the words of the men who fought on the front lines. With vivid, unforgettable detail, these Marines reveal harrowing accounts of combat with an implacable enemy, the camaraderie they found, the friends they lost, and the aftermath of the war's impact on their lives. With unprecedented access to the veterans, rare photographs, and unpublished memoirs, Voices of the Pacific presents true stories of heroism as told by such World War II veterans as Sid Phillips, R.V. Burgin, and Chuck Tatum—whose exploits were featured in the classic HBO miniseries The Pacific—and their Marine buddies from the legendary 1st Marine Division.Book Voices of the Pacific, Expanded Edition Review :
This is one of the best books I have ever read about the history of WWII In the Pacific. As a college student from 1962-1966 I was a history major. You are taught in writing about history to research from original sources. This book illustrates why that rule is important. I am so impressed by the greatest generation who fought so well in WWII when the entire world was in danger of being taken over by despotic governments in Germany and Japan. I wonder if the young of today who have had life handed to them on a silver platter could or would rise to the occasion to defend our country in time of need like those in this book. I fear the answer is no. If we can't stand during the national anthem at a football game we won't be able to stand to defend our liberties when the time comes to do so. Not a single marine in this book would disrespect our flag. My father joined the Marine Corps in 1939. He enlisted because, as one of the voices in the book mentions, "He saw it coming," and wanted to choose his military affiliation. Dad saw action in the Pacific theater, driving a Sherman light tank. He served in New Georgia, the Marshall Islands, and the Russell Islands. He was wounded out of the war in November of 1943. He returned home and suffered from Malaria for many years.Much later, after hearing a few of dad's stories, I gave him a tape recorder, and encouraged him to use it, to preserve his story of WW2. At the time (early 1970s) there weren't many books written about the war in the Pacific. When dad passed in 1990, mom discovered his audio tapes. She transcribed them and they are privately published.I am halfway through this book, and I recall dad specifically mentioning the drinking water stored in old fuel drums. The day dad was wounded, he and his men were given no food, so he shared his stash of Hershey Bars with his crew. What is not mentioned (so far) is the lack of physical support offered Marines - things that General Patton made sure his men received on a daily basis -- like meals, dry socks, & adequate medical treatment. All of the 'minor repairs' to hands, faces, or feet were performed without anesthetic.Dad endured a few of them, like those mentioned in this book.I encourage all who read these stories to share them with young people who have no knowledge of the sacrifices made by these men and many like them today. God bless them all.
